The Festival de Cannes is not open to the public, but under Cannes Cinéphiles, organised by the Cannes Cinéma association, in partnership with the city, the 4,000 residents of Cannes who belong to the association are authorised to attend many screenings at the Festival.
Before 1939 Jean Zay, Minister for Education and Fine Arts, wanted to start a cultural event in France to rival the Venice International Film Festival. More than a year after the end of the war in 1946, the first edition of the International Film Festival in Cannes finally took place.
In May of each year, the Festival de Cannes takes over the city and newspapers worldwide.
Professionals from the cinema industry, international stars and up-and-coming actors rub shoulders with the crowd looking for surprising pictures and encounters. Enjoy!
