After the success of Noé, Thierry Malandain, an emblematic choreographer on the neo-classical stage, is this time taking on an icon of French history: to evoke the person who was the incarnation of the royalty whose downfall she would precipitate, 14 dynamic and colourful tableaux retrace the destiny of the Archduchess of Austria who became Queen of France.
His particularly honed movement style, in which the magnificent dancers with a top-flight technique reveal both raw and refined beauty, illustrates the torment of a hostile court, an unassuming husband and the conflagration of a troubled era, while highlighting the controversial queen, modern woman, protector of the arts and attentive mother.
Carried by the music of Haydn and Gluck, the completely harmonious stage stetting excels in suggesting the agonizing duality of enclosure and exposure that was life at Versailles. A dance with delicate baroque inspirations tells of the agitation, the frenzy of intrigue and the festive hysteria of a court on the point of being grasped by history.
Le Nouvel Observateur: One of the virtues of Thierry Malandain is that he is completely honest. This is visible in his work, in which everything points to a search for accuracy and eloquence, in order to avoid the commonplace and clumsiness…
L’Express: Thierry Malandain creates movement by the accumulation of precise gestures. Hence the extreme refinement of a choreographic phrase born of small waves that cover each other in order to procure the fluidity and natural effect that are his trademark.
